5th Grade,

Enjoy your break….Relax, have fun and enjoy time with your family and friends.  Come back next year refreshed and ready to work hard.  We are about half way done the year.  It has been a great first half and fully expect it to be an incredible second half of having a good time while learning everything you need to achieve your goals of moving on to 6th grade.

Don’t forget your reading logs when you return and for those of you who still need to turn in your math packets they will be do as well.

5th grade updates

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

Hello parents/guardians!

As we near winter break, our class would like to share some updates with you. We have been working hard all year in Language Arts and have recently been focusing on skills such as sequencing and compare/contrast. We created a project in which we compared and contrasted the family from our weekly story with our own families. We even practiced this skill by comparing ourselves to some of our classmates!

In Math, we have recently worked on volume and created our own 3-D boxes to help us understand how length, width, and height make up a 3-dimensional object. We are now working on subtraction problems and have discovered many different ways to solve three or four digit problems, such as adding up, subtracting back, place value, and the standard algorithm. Ask your child to show you some of these strategies!

We have also just finished up a Science unit on ecosystems and are now learning about 19th and 20th century American history in Social Studies. We have learned about events such as the Wright brothers and their first flight and the Spanish-American War.

Remind your students to always give 100% and put forth their best effort, and have a safe and happy holiday season!

SCHOOL TIME!!! CALLING ALL MR. A 5th Graders!!!

Parents, Guardians and Students,

Welcome to the 5th grade.  My name is Mr. Arent and I will be your childs teacher for the year.  This is going to be a fantastic year and I am very excited to get started!!   I want to share a little bit about my philosophy on teaching.

I believe it is important to recognize that all children are capable of learning; students will however differ in their ability levels.  As your childs teacher, I must strive to be consistent, fair, and determined.  I will offer a respectful learning environment where students will learn from their mistakes and honesty will be expected.  My role as the 5th grade teacher will vary in that my teaching style must be versatile; flexible and my ability to adapt will be crucial.  It will be important to be a coach who fosters leadership as well as teamwork.

I must have a solid foundation with the community as well as you the parents and guardians.  It will be so important for us to work together.  All of this will in return help everyone know the students better and help to build respect and rapport.  I realize that I must share the same enthusiasm all day; consistency is very important in keeping children’s attention.  In my classroom, students will consistently learn new lessons individually as well as in groups, which are a great way for students to achieve a common goal.  Tasks may be oral or written, both short answer and essay format.  Lessons may be constructivist or hands-on learning; regardless, I am determined to make learning as fun as possible so that the students will be thrilled to come to school each day.  Students will be assessed by the successful completion of projects, exams, and various assignments as well as through their active participation.

Its going to be an exciting year at Pleasantville Elementary.  I plan on keeping this website updated on a regular basis with homework, school news and whats going on in this classroom.   It is important to me that you as parents and guardians know what is going on with your child.  I hope we can work together to make this a successful school year.  If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.

Thanks,

Mr. A
